All bodies are not made equal! There are many body types in both women and men. Many times we don’t like our body types and want to change one body type to another. It’s a matter of preference and nothing to be ashamed of. Fortunately, many times our body types are dictated by the amount of fat in different parts of the body. Fat can be easily removed from one part of the body and transferred to another part in a process called Liposuction. With Liposuction, we can sculpt the body to achieve the body type you want.

High definition liposculpting is like a sculptor who sculpts a statuette.
Liposuction is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a thin, hollow tube called a cannula to remove localized areas of body fat. The cannula is inserted through extremely small incisions, and then moved back and forth to loosen excess fat, which is suctioned out using a vacuum or a cannula-attached syringe. Treated areas look slimmer and more contoured, and in better overall proportion to the rest of the body. However, liposuction is not a method for losing weight, and is not effective in eliminating cellulite, or tightening loose and sagging skin. The ideal candidate for liposuction is in good overall health, but has one or more areas of fat that do not respond to diet or exercise. Areas that are often treated with liposuction include the thighs, abdomen, arms, back, hips, buttocks, chest, face, calves and ankles. Liposuction can be performed alone, or in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, such as thighplasty and abdominoplasty.
THE LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE
The technique used at Orion Aesthetics is called “awake tumescense liposuction” techniques is tumescent liposuction. What is tumescense anesthesia? It means that the liposuction area is infiltrated with large volume of Lidocaine and epinephrine. Lidocaine helps numb the liposuction area so that liposuction can be performed while the patient is awake. Usually pain and anxiety meds are also given during the liposuction so that the experience is pleasant and forgotten. Usually you dont have much memory of it because of the IV meds also given. Without tumescense anesthesia, liposuction can only be done under general anesthesia. At Orion Aesthetics, we prefer awake tumescense liposuction because of less risks associated with it. Almost all the deaths and other serious problems caused by liposuction has been in cases where general anesthesia has been used. It is performed on an outpatient basis. During tumescent liposuction, a solution comprising saline solution, lidocaine (an anesthetic) and epinephrine (a blood-vessel contractor) is injected into the area being treated. The solution causes the targeted tissue swell and become firm, which makes it easier to remove via the cannula. The advantages to this technique are that the anesthetic is built in, so there is no need for general or IV sedation, and blood loss is minimized because the epinephrine constricts blood vessels. Many times we have patients making movies of their liposuction and carrying out a conversation in the operating room.
RECOVERY FROM LIPOSUCTION
After liposuction, patients experience mild swelling, bruising and discomfort in the treated area. For the first 3 days, patients come to the office to get thier dressings changed. There is leaking from the liposuction holes because all the anesthesia fluid pumped into the liposuction area is not sucked out, rest is allowed to drain through the cannula holes over then next 3 days. For the first day, you have to use a waterproof cover on your bed because of the leakage of the fluids. Patients are in compression garment all the time in the first 3 days and are not supposed to remove the compression garment. The compression garment is removed in the office, the dressings changed and compression garment placed back. The patients are instructed not to remove the compression garment. The fluid leakage ususally stops on day 4 and its on day 4 when you are able to get out of the compression garment to take shower. The compression garment is to be worn all the time except when showering or cleaning it, for 3 weeks following the liposuction. Patients can return to work after 4 days but we recommend not returning to work for 7 days. Everyone is encouraged to walk a few miles daily starting with the next day after liposuction. Pain is controlled with Hydrocodone and usually lasts only 4-5 days. Bed rest is not a good idea and not recommended. Exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for 3-4 weeks.
RISKS OF LIPOSUCTION
In addition to the usual risks associated with surgery, risks associated with liposuction include the following:
- Loose or rippled skin
- Worsening of cellulite
- Contour irregularities
- Pigmentation irregularities
When large amounts of fat are removed, surgery to remove excess skin may be necessary.
RESULTS OF LIPOSUCTION
Results of the liposuction procedure take 3 months. The liposuction area is swollen, tender and firm for upto 3 months. The skin will keep tightening for upto 6 months after the procedure. The cannula holes usually heal without scarring due to the scar cream which we use. We also use creams to tighten the skin over the liposuction area. We also have the ability to tighten the skin if there is any looseness without tummy tuck. Only those who are very obese and have a fat fold hanging over thier pubis will need tummy tuck, otherwise we have figured out a way to tighten any skin on the body without surgery.
