EYELIDS AND AGING

The upper eyelid and lower eyelid wrinkling is the earliest sign of aging which appear on the face because this skin is thinner and less resilient to aging than rest of the facial skin. Very often we note that while rest of the facial skin looks more youthful in a middle aged human, because of procedures like lasers, anti-aging creams, dermal fillers, face lift surgery, Ultrasound, Plasma or Radiofrequency devices and other procedures done to reverse aging of the skin, the eyelids look older and more wrinkled than rest of the face. When we apply anti-aging creams to the face, we often don’t use them around the eyes, even the sunblock is not used often around the eyelids. Our eyes give out our age and they should always look younger than rest of the face. We at Orion Aesthetics pay attention to the whole face and also the neck because we consider all parts of the face and neck and aesthetic unit.

TYPES OF TREATMENT

1. Surgery aka Blepharoplasty

At present surgery is the main treatment of Drooping eyebrows, drooping upper eyelids, wrinkling and bags in the lower eyelids, are often treated by a surgical procedure called blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty does help with tightening and lifting off the upper eyelid, however it leaves a permanent scar and it doesn’t prevent future sagging and wrinkling of the upper eyelid skin. Similarly, wrinkling of the lower eyelid is often treated with Surgery called lower Blepharoplasty, where surgical procedure doesn’t result in a scar because the incision is at the level of the eyelashes. However, it’s still doesn’t prevent sagging and wrinkling of the skin later on. Why does surgery not help with the future sagging and wrinkling of the skin? Because it doesn’t change the quality of the skin which is still aged, photodamaged and is sick. A very photodamaged skin is essentially “sick skin” or “terminally ill skin”.

2. Laser Skin Rejuvenation

So what is the alternative to surgery? Laser Skin Rejuvenationis the gold standard skin rejuvenation procedure for any skin of the body. Look in the laser skin rejuvenation section about the theory of the procedure and evidence behind its efficacy. Laser skin Resurfacing normalizes the structure of the skin leading to improved long term results. Dr Uppal is of the opinion that if loose skin is the result of aging, then replacing it with younger skin with normal architecture will lead to tightening of the skin. It will not only be tighter but its surface quality will look younger and the structure of skin will be more youthful. Youthful skin will always last longer than aged skin.

3.Best Treatment

What is the best method of tightening of upper and lower eyelids? According to Dr Uppal, the best method for tightening of the upper and lower eyelids should be Ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing which tightens the skin, improves the texture and changes the future course of aging of the skin. Laser skin resurfacing leads to longer term results than surgical tightening of the upper and lower eyelids because of the skin rejuvenation associated with it. The upper eyelid should definitely not have surgery because of the long term scar present unless we are able to somehow prevent that scar formation by applying anti scar technologies, however skin rejuvenation will have to be ultimately performed to prevent future sagging skin or in another decade the upper eyelid will be facing a second surgical procedure. The lower eyelid can definitely be treated with a combination of surgery and Laser Skin Rejuvenation.

4. Our Results

At Orion Aesthetics we tighten eyelids with skincare and lasers. Our results of Laser Skin Resurfacing have been remarkable as shown in several examples below and these are long term changes and therefore it’s less likely to need surgical tightening in the future plus we have long term skin rejuvenation and maintenance plans which can keep the skin looking young indefinitely. Other process of skin tightening has been explained in detail in the skin tightening Section of this website
